On August 18, TOI reported that Victoria Centre for Management in Sharjah was offering

BBA

along with other programmes claiming that it was affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. The report pointed out that the courses were offered illegally as no Indian university is allowed to operate distance education centres outside its jurisdiction. In 2014, the University Grants Commission had issued orders to all universities operating distance education centres outside its state of jurisdiction to shut down the centres.

In July 2017, the Madras high court issued an order directing Bharathiar University to shut down all its distance education centres and centre for partnership programmes (CPOPs).

Taking a cue from the TOI report, a media organisation reported that six distance education centres of Bharathiar University were still operating in the UAE even after the HC order. Following these reports, the Indian consulate had issued the notice warning parents against admitting their children into these centres.

"Students and parents are requested to verify the approval of any such study centres offering degrees of Indian universities through ODL mode from the website of the UGC," said the Gulf News, quoting the Indian consulate circular.

As a result, many parents have withdrawn their children's admission. "Many of my friends who admitted their wards here have got admissions into universities in the United Kingdom or other colleges in Sharjah," said a parent, who was seeking admission for his son in BBA at Victoria Centre. "However, the centre is still holding a few students stating that the centre is legally approved and the degree is valid," the parent said.

Bharathiar University vice-chancellor A Ganapathi said that the university had instructed all its distance education centres outside Tamil Nadu and India to stop admissions a few days ago. "After reading the TOI report, we had informed all our centres not to carry out admissions. If they continue to do so, the university will not be responsible for awarding degrees to the students," Ganapathi said.
