Ailing elephant dies in TN

COIMBATORE: An ailing juvenile cow elephant, which was given treatment in

Kozhikamuthi

elephant camp near Topslip in Anaimalai Tiger Reserve (

ATR

), died in the early hours of Thursday.


The cow elephant, aged around six years, was found inside the reserve forest in

Ulandy

forest range of ATR on Monday with wounds on its right hind leg. The elephant was not able to move due to the wound.

A team led by forest veterinary officer

A Sukumar

cleaned the maggots and pus on the right hind leg of the elephant and applied medicines on the wound. The officials shifted the elephant to the Kozhikamuthi elephant camp where it was kept inside a kraal (a wooden enclosure).

An expert team from

Tamil Nadu Veterinary

and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Namakkal, visited Kozhikamuthi elephant camp on Wednesday and examined the elephant. They also dressed it wound.

Forest veterinary officer Sukumar said that the juvenile female elephant had septicemia on the limb. The elephant collapsed inside the kraal after not being able to stand on the wounded leg. It died without responding to treatment.

After postmortem, the carcass was buried.
