COIMBATORE: The Race Course police on Saturday arrested a remand prisoner, who escaped from the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital last year.
The arrested person was identified as G Gajendran, 50, of Arisipalayam in Salem district. He was arrested for setting fire to tyres in front of Mahaliamman shrine at Five Corner, Vinayagar temple at Kottaimedu, Mappillai Vinayagar shrine in front of Coimbatore railway station and Selva Vinayagar temple at Nallampalayam in July 2020, and was lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
Gajendran tested positive for Covid -19 on January 27, 2022 and was admitted to CMCH. The next day, around 2am, he managed to escape from the ward. Subsequently, constable V Balaji, 29, who was deployed in the Covid ward, was placed under suspension.
The Race Course police registered a case and formed a special team to nab Gajendran. Police arrested him from a house at Pullukadu in South Ukkadam on Saturday. He was remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison. tnn
