Coimbatore: A joint inspection conducted by school education, police and transport department officials on Tuesday found 76 school vehicles with defects.
Of the 1,355 vehicles belonging to 230 schools under the four RTO offices in the city, 901 were inspected at the Police Recruitment School ground, a transport department official said. “We checked the defects using a 17-point system to ensure the safety of kids.
Owners of the 76 vehicles found with defects have been asked to rectify the issues and get them certified. The remaining 378 vehicles will be inspected soon,” he said.
District education officer for private schools Geetha, regional transport officers Sivagurunathan, Sathyakumar and Balamurugan conducted the inspection. City police commissioner V Balakrishnan and collector
Kranti Kumar Pati supervised the process.
An eye check-up camp was conducted for the bus drivers. They also attended an awareness session on firefighting.
Vehicles operated by schools in Pollachi and Mettupalayam have been checked for defects, the official added.
