Coimbatore: Health officials with the city corporation conducted a surprise check in 40 shops in central zone and seized 75 kg of one-time use plastic bags and other banned materials on Tuesday.
A city health official said that the drive was conducted based on an instruction from corporation commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara.
“The shops were inspected by a team led by zonal sanitary officer Thirumal.
A total of 12,500 was collected as fine from the violators,” the official said.
The corporation was unable to conduct inspections in the past few months due the pandemic and urban local body elections, but teams of officials will conduct frequent checks in future and action will be taken against violators, the official added.
