6 women labourers buried alive in building collapse near Ooty
UDHAGAMANDALAM: Six women construction workers were buried alive after a portion of a public toilet, located on a slope above a building under construction, collapsed on them at Lovedale near Ooty on Wednesday. Four workers suffered injuries and were rescued from the debris.
The deceased were identified as Radha, 38, Bakkiyam, 36, Muthulakshmi, 36, Uma, 35, Sangeetha, 30, and Sakila, 30, — all from Ooty and surrounding areas. The injured workers — Jeyanthi, 56, Santhi, 45, Thomas, 24, and Mahesh, 23, — were admitted to Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Ooty.
Seventeen workers were involved in work to lay the foundation for a revetment at the site when the portion of the public toilet collapsed. Seven workers escaped as they were working a little away from the accident spot. After visiting the injured at GMCH, Nilgiris collector M Aruna said, “An inquiry will be conducted to find out whether the private building under construction has proper approval and if there are any deviations. We will act if any violation is found.”
Police arrested Frizo, owner of the building, Prakash, contractor, and supervisors Anandharaj and Zahir Ahamed and booked them under sections 288, 336, 337, and 304(II) of IPC.
GMCH dean Dr Geethanjali said, “All the four injured are out of danger. They are under observation at the emergency ward.”
Expressing condolences, chief minister M K Stalin announced a solatium of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 each to the injured. Governor R N Ravi offered his condolences to the families of the deceased through a message on the X handle of Raj Bhavan.
