COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police have arrested more than 50 people after launching a special drive against people consuming alcohol in open places. The police arrested 36 people on Saturday and 15 people on Sunday.
The Coimbatore city police are taking stringent action against people who consume liquor in public places in the city. Acting on the instructions of city police commissioner N Kannan, personnel from various stations in the city launched a special drive at multiple locations. The arrested men were booked under Section 4(A) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition (TNP) Act. Later, they were released on bail.
On Sunday, Thudiyalur and Peelamedu police registered three cases each while Saravanampatti, Podanur and Singanallur police registered two cases each.
A senior police officer said consuming alcohol in open places, selling banned tobacco products and smoking in public needed to be controlled. “Special drives are being conducted to address this issue, and legal action is being taken against persons consuming alcohol in public places,” he said.
