Coimbatore: A 20-year-old college student was on Saturday killed and his friend seriously injured after the bike they were travelling in rammed a truck carrying LPG cylinder on Puliyakulam Road here. Police have detained the truck driver and further probe is on.
The deceased was identified as Siva Ganesh M, of Podanur. He was on the pillion without helmet. The injured, identified as Rahul S, of Udumalpet, was admitted to K G Hospital and his condition is said to be critical.
Police on the case said the duo was second year B.Sc students of Karpagam College. The accident occurred while they were on their way to Ramanathapuram from Lakshmi Mills around 12.30pm. Rahul was riding the bike at a high speed at time of the incident, they said.
As they reached the s-bend near Coimbatore Kidney Centre, the truck suddenly turned right without turning on the indicator. "Rahul was driving the bike at 100Kmph and could not control the two-wheeler when the truck took the sudden turn and rammed against it," police said. Both sustained critical injuries and were taken to the government hospital, where doctors declared Siva brought dead. Rhul, who sustained head injuries, was later shifted to K G Hospital. Both his arms were also fractured.
Motorists on the road said the duo was riding the bike at high speed and had verbally abused a motorist for blocking their way near Lakshmi Mills. The bike belonged to Siva. Police said Siva had purchased the bike nearly two months back.
Postmortem would be performed on Siva's body on Sunday 10am. We have detained the truck driver, Ramesh Kumar. We will register a case after we get the postmortem report," police said.
