1,500 saplings planted near Kurichi lake

Coimbatore: People from all walks of life came together on Saturday to plant 1,500 saplings along Kurichi lake’s outlet channel.
Collector Kranti Kumar Pati, mayor Kalpana Anandakumar and corporation commissioner M Prathap took part in the drive, which was carried out by government departments with the help of NGO Kovai Kulangal Padhugappu Amaippu.
The saplings were planted in alluvial soil collected from Perur Periyakulam, NGO coordinator R Manikandan said. “The soil was deposited in five-foot deep pits and mixed with water hyacinths from Kurichi lake as manure. We used 250 loads of soil and 75 loads of water hyacinth,” he told TOI.
Forty-eight varieties of indigenous trees were planted with the support of ZF Wind Power.TNN
