140 students to benefit from Anbukarangal scheme in Coimbatore district

COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu govt’s Anbukarangal scheme, which provides Rs 2,000 per month to children who lost their parents, was launched in Coimbatore on Monday. Around 140 students in the district will benefit from the scheme which would ensure their education till the age of 18. This scheme is part of the state govt's Thaayumanavar initiative.

Coimbatore MP Ganapathy P Rajkumar and district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar distributed identity cards to 140 children, who lost their parents and are being raised by relatives, allowing them to receive the monthly assistance.

An official with the district child protection office said details of impoverished families were obtained from the Tamil Nadu E-Governance Agency to identify children under the Anbukarangal scheme. A mobile application was developed by the Department of Child Welfare, and details of children who lost their parents were verified at the district level by volunteers and self-help group members.

"A field survey was conducted based on the data received from the Tamil Nadu E-Governance Agency. Applications recommended by the officers were verified by the respective district child protection officer and approved by the district collector," the official said.
