1.4kg gold seized from air passengers

Coimbatore: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday arrested two passengers for smuggling 1.4 kilograms of gold worth Rs 56.94 lakh from Sharjah.

Based on a tip-off, DRI sleuths had intercepted Juned Yusuf Shaikh, 22 and Azim Sajid Qureshi, 23, both hailing from Mumbai, at the airport on Friday morning. The officers found gold in the form of foils concealed in the cartons carried by the duo.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that they were running a fancy store in Mumbai. They had left for Sharjah 10 days ago and had tickets to travel to Mumbai from Coimbatore.

As the offence is bailable, both of them were arrested and later released on bail. TNN
