Youth group sows seeds of green cover renewal
CHENNAI: With the state’s green cover having been ravaged over the years in the name of development and through calamities like cyclone Vardah, a group of young volunteers have turned to the state tree to restore the lost canopy.
The youths who are part of the ‘Panaigal Kodi’ initiative conducted a palm tree plantation drive on the bunds of the Perungalathur Lake during the weekend. Panigai Siva who organised the event said this was the first step towards fulfilling their dream of planting one crore palmyrah trees across the state, adding that they will carry out similar drives every week.
“The initiative was started a year back and we are planting the seeds in 22 districts across the state. We first hold meetings to identify lakes and water bodies and collect seeds to be planted there,’’ said Siva who is the coordinator for Krishnagiri district. He said the palmyrah was selected as there is zero maintenance to be carried out and once it is planted, it can grow on its own. Siva said the team plans to plant over 1,000 seeds by the end of August.
The state is a pioneer in the development of palm products in the country. Out of the estimated 8.59 crore palmyrah trees in India, about 5.10 crore are in Tamil Nadu. Dr. Jayshree Vencatesan, managing trustee of the Care Earth Trust, said the palmyra was an apt choice. “Though it takes a lot of time for the palmyrah to grow, it has immense benefits as it strengthens lake bunds and is a good habitat for birds especially parakeets and kites. The tree is multifunctional and every part of it offers value. It is part of our cultural landscape and it would be a great move if the state government encourages such initiatives.”
