Women, want to try your hand at stand-up comedy?

There are plenty of stand-up comedy routines in the city. But there are hardly any where you can see women taking the stage to try their hand at comedy, feels Jinal Patel, one of the founders of WSquare, a co-working space for women in the city. That’s why WSquare will host ‘Read My Lips,’ an open mic for budding and seasoned stand-up women comedians, here on April 22.

“There are plenty of stand-up comedy acts happening in Chennai. But we hardly see any women getting out there and trying their skills,” says Patel. “So we thought of organising this event as a platform for women who are looking for a place to try their hand at comedy,” she says, adding that, as a co-working space for women, they do a lot of initiatives to encourage women.
Both established and aspiring woman comics can try out their materials, interact with fellow comedians, get tips from mentors and network with an all-woman audience.
Each woman will be given four minutes to perform. You can use any material, including guitar and poetry. The event is open to anyone with a sense of humour. There is a fee of Rs 200 for both performers as well as people who wish to attend.
“Established comedians such as Syaada Ali, Syama Harini and Vikram Balaji have volunteered to be part of the upcoming show,” says Patel, adding that it would also encourage women who would like to try stand-up comedy but are hesitant to do so.
Interested people have to register at http://go.eventshigh.com/vpxtq.
“If we get a good response, we are planning to have a stand-up comedy workshop for women in May,” says Patel.
The event will be held at WSquare in Adyar from 6pm to 8pm.
