CHENNAI: A man and a woman, were arrested on Monday on charges of forging documents and taking possession of 1.5 acre land worth 10 crore in Sholinganallur on Monday.
Police identified the arrested as D Janaki, a resident of Kannan Koil Street, Malayadi Vembakkam in Chengalpet and V Sundaram from Kumaran Nagar in Sholinganallur.
The duo managed to obtain patta for the land that belonged to one Bhanupriya by submitting forged documents at Neelangarai registrar office.
Janaki then transferred the land to Sundaram by registering a power of attorney in his name.
Bhanupriya, the original owner of the property, had given a power of attorney to a relative P S Ravindran so that he can maintain it as she was not in town.
The land grabbing attempt came to light when Ravindran visited the land and found that some people had built a tent on it and were claiming that they had been appointed by its new owners to guard the property.
Following a complaint from Ravindran, the city police commissionerate transferred the case to central crime branch which registered cases against the culprits under IPC section 420 (cheating), 447 (punishment for criminal trespass), and 471 (using forged documents as genuine).! Questioning revealed that the accused had forged the documents and grabbed the land. They were remanded in judicial custody.
