Chennai: A lavish party held to celebrate a ‘secret wedding' at a star hotel in MRC Nagar on Sunday landed the newly wed and nine of his friends in police net for using ganja. They were later let off on bail. Police seized 5g of ganja and 48g of high-grade ganja, with 11 mobile phones.
Police said Santhosh, 27, from Kolathur was in love with a woman for several years, but faced opposition from her family. Despite this, Santhosh married her last week with the support from close friends. To celebrate his wedding, Santhosh hosted a party at a hotel on Sunday, where he supplied ganja along with liquor.
A few hotel staff who supplied food at the event, found the group smoking ganja. They alerted the Pattinampakkam police station, fearing legal repercussions. Acting on this tip-off, a special team raided the venue and confirmed use of ganja.
They initially caught hold of Santhosh, who hosted the get-together. During questioning, Santhosh revealed that his friend Jagadeeswaran from Choolai, who works in films, procured ganja.
Following this, police arrested Santhosh, Jagadeeswaran, 34, from Choolai; Deepak, 27, from Ambattur; Aradhath Akshayarajee, 21, from Surapet; Rohith, 21, from Tiruvallur; Krishnaparik, 20, and Manish, 23, both from Tiruvallur district; Sarathkumar, 32, from Tiruvallur; Madhankumar, 29, from Poonamallee; Jilan, 28, from Tiruvallur; and Kamesh, 25, from Ambattur.
Among the arrested, a few were students and others were techies. Police suspect the ganja was brought from Kerala and Goa.
