NEW DELHI: Heavy rainfall flooded parts of Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, on Monday, prompting local officials to use pumps to clear water from residential areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light rain in Thoothukudi for December 23 and 24, with similar conditions expected on December 25.

IMD also predicts light to moderate rainfall in Ramanathapuram district on December 24 and 25.
Areas like Postal Telegram Colony, Rajiv Nagar, Rajagopal Nagar, Bharati Nagar, Amuda Nagar, KVK Nagar and Asoke Nagar experienced waterlogging.

Thoothukudi and other districts experienced moderate to heavy rainfall last Friday, with Trichy seeing continuous rain.

A week prior, schools in 11 districts, including Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet and Tiruvallur, closed due to heavy rain.

Meanwhile, the Odisha Meteorological Department forecasts light to moderate rain in several districts on December 24 and isolated areas of coastal Odisha on December 25.

IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty reported the minimum temperature in Koraput and Nayagarh districts was 11.5 degrees Celsius in the past 24 hours.

Delhi also experienced light rain and lower temperatures on Monday, with a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 20 degrees Celsius. "The temperatures have dropped here because it has been raining... the rain started around 5 am today.." a Delhi resident said. The IMD predicts below-normal cold wave days in northwestern India this winter.

Delhi's air quality remains "severe," with an AQI of 403 at 7 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
