Violin maestro to get award for lifetime achievement
CHENNAI: Classical music excellence awards will be presented at the Bharat Sangeet Utsav for the first time this year. The lifetime achievement award is being conferred on violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman.
Unlike awards given by the sabhas where awardees are selected by a committee, the 2008 utsav awards will be based on market surveys, rasika polls and popular voting.

The fourth edition of Bharat Sangeet Utsav, the curtain raiser to the music season in Chennai will feature Grammy award winner Viswa Mohan Bhatt among others.
Starting October 31, the 10-day event will see Hindustani and Carnatic musicians performing for two hours everyday. Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, Sanjeev Abhyankar, Vinayak Torvi, T V Sankaranarayanan, Sudha Raghunathan, S Sowmya, Sanjay Subrahmanyan, Vijay Siva and Nityashree Mahadevan are scheduled to perform. Violinist T N Krishnan, who is turning 80 this year, will perform a jugalbandi with his brother N Rajam, an exponent of Hindustani music on the violin. M S Gopalakrishnan and Neduneri Krishnamoorthy are the other legends scheduled to perform in the utsav.
A number of emerging artistes will also be offered a platform to showcase their prowess. Other events this year include a sangeeta upanyasam (musical discourse) by Visaka Hari, the young chartered accountant. "The idea is to bring old and established musicians and the fledgling ones under one umbrella so that rasikas get a real taste of the two genres," said S N Sasikiran of Carnatica, organisers of the event.
There is no disparity in music and the utsav will be an opportunity for rasikas to realise that, he added. Three concerts will take place everyday from 3 pm.
