An elderly man died after a speeding van hit a bullock cart and sent it crashing into a tricycle on which the man was sleeping on Wall Tax Road in the early hours of Sunday.

CHENNAI: An elderly man died after a speeding van hit a bullock cart and sent it crashing into a tricycle on which the man was sleeping on Wall Tax Road in the early hours of Sunday.
Two other men who were sleeping on the bullock cart were severely injured.
Police said C Jayachandran, 65, a daily wage worker was sleeping on a tricycle parked on the roadside on Wall Tax Road when the incident occurred.

A van was speeding on the road around 1.45am when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it slammed into a bullock cart.
“The impact of the crash lifted the bullock cart off the ground and sent it hurtling into the tricycle, crushing Jayachandran,” a police officer said.
Parthasarathy, 30, and Saranraj, 28, who were sleeping alongside Jayachandran, were seriously injured. Passersby rushed them to Government General Hospital. Jayachandran, who sustained serious injuries to the head and legs, died in the hospital at 3.30am. The condition of Parthasarathy and Saranraj, bothdaily wage workers, is said to be stable.
Elephant Gate traffic investigation police registered a case under IPC section 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) and arrested van driver S Porselvan, 25, of Manali New Town.
“We initially registered a case under section 337 of the IPC (causing hurt by endangering the life or personal safety of others) but later altered it to section 304 A,” said traffic investigation inspector R Rajasekaran. He said the accident occurred when the van driver tried to swerve around a curve and lost control of the vehicle.
