VA Tech Wabag secures Rs 3,251 crore order in Saudi Arabia
CHENNAI: VA Tech Wabag, a multinational technology company in the water sector, has secured a consortium order worth approximately Rs 3,251 crore ($371 million) to set up an Independent Sewage Treatment Plant (ISTP) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The consortium order, awarded by Al Haer Environmental Services Company for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC), involves building a 200 MLD ISTP, the company said in a statement on Sunday. The facility is being developed by a consortium comprising Miahona Company (lead), Marafiq, and NV Besix SA for its off-taker, the Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC). SWPC is the principal off-taker for water and wastewater projects in Saudi Arabia.
The EPC consortium for this project includes Wabag and Mutlaq Al-Ghowairi Contracting Company (MGC). As the technology partner and leader of the EPC consortium, Wabag will design and build the ISTP, while MGC will be responsible for laying the transmission pipelines and constructing the reservoirs.
Wabag has had a presence in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East for more than four decades. The Chennai-headquartered company has executed over 30 large-scale water and wastewater treatment projects in Saudi Arabia.
The new order comes two months after the cancellation of a Rs 2,700 crore order secured by the company in September 2024 from the Saudi Water Authority for a 300 MLD desalination plant in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.
When contacted, an official Wabag spokesperson said the tender for the Yanbu project has been recently re-announced. "We are currently preparing the bid and will submit the same. The earlier tender was canceled due to an internal decision by the customer. As we understand, they decided to change some specifications and scope of the project. Being a public procurement process, they had to follow the procedure of canceling and re-tendering the project," the spokesperson added.
