“So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate,” says the
Bible
. Accepted. But you should not preach this to someone whose task is to ensure
social distancing
during Covid-19.
The ‘one flesh’ in the present context is a couple who visited a utensil shop in
Adambakkam
. The couple were trying to select some cups, in unison. A salesgirl who was following them said, “Don’t come so close. Stand a little apart from each other.” The couple didn’t pay any attention.
The salesgirl was irritated. “Please don’t stand together. Move a little away from each other,” she said.
“Why should we move away from each other?” the couple asked in a chorus.
“You are not supposed to stand together because of corona. My manager will shout at me if he sees you stand together,” the girl said.
“We live in the same house, sleep in the same bed and came here on the same bike. And why should we move apart now?” the husband asked.
The salesgirl didn’t accept the explanation and complained to the manager. He came to the couple and requested them to move a little apart.
The couple said if they couldn’t shop together, they were not going to buy anything from there. Shocked, the manager said, “No need to move away. You are husband and wife, right? It’s ok. Please carry on.”
