CHENNAI: Two students belonging to Bihar, studying in MGR University and SRM University respectively, were arrested on Tuesday for kidnapping another student of MGR University and demanding a ransom from his father. Police found the kidnapped student, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, locked in a room in Mogappair.
Police said Amitabh Deepak (26), who was studying in MGR University for the past six years as he could not clear the arrears, and Rajkumar (22), a first-year MBA student from SRM University, kidnapped Ram Kumar, a third year MCS student of MGR University, following dispute over sharing of commission for getting new students.
The duo allegedly threatened the father of Ram Kumar, saying that his son would be killed if he did not deposit Rs 50,000 in a certain account by 11 am on Tuesday.
On receiving the call, Ramesh Balia, father of Ram Kumar, immediately called up his son but his mobile phone was switched off. He then called up his son's roommate who told him that two persons had come and taken Ram Kumar away. Balia lodged a complaint with the Maduravoyal police over phone.
A special team headed by assistant commissioner Jayaraj began the investigation. They first traced the mobile phone number which was used to call Balia. They traced the the call to a house in the locality. When they made searches on the premises and found Ram Kumar locked up in a room. Police then picked up the duo, who told the police that Ram Kumar owed them a share of commission for getting admission to two students.
Police said both the accused, who hail from Bihar, were against Ram Kumar, a native of UP, getting admissions for a commission. The issue of getting new students for a commission is a major cause of trouble for students coming from other states. In two recent cases, a
Sathyabama University student was beaten to death by a rival student gang on ECR, and another student was also kidnapped.
