Chennai: Two men from Chennai drowned in the sea off Pulicat lake in neighbouring Thiruvallur district on Monday. Despite a ban on boating at the lake, a group of 10 people from the city signed up for the adventure.
The men who went in the boat were swimming, when three people — Madhan Kumar, 25, Arun Kumar, 24 and Ebenezer, 23 — got stuck in a slushy part and cried out for help.
Local fishermen rushed and rescued Madhan Kumar and Ebenezer. Madhan died without responding to treatment while Ebenezer is undergoing treatment at the Government Stanley Hospital. Arun Kumar’s body washed ashore on Tuesday, police said.
Investigations revealed that Arun Kumar is a mechanical engineering graduate and Madhan Kumar, a BCom graduate. They were working at private firms in the city. The Thiruppalaivanam police said that they had taken the trip illegally.
Police have registered a case and are investigating. Police said they would intensify checks.
Police said boating in the lake was banned after 22 people died while taking a ride in December 2011.
