CHENNAI: Two men suffered severe burn injuries in a cracker blast at a temple festival near Manavala Nagar in Tiruvallur on Sunday night. The injured were identified as Shaddique Ali, owner of the cracker unit, and his staff, Sanjeevi. They were rescued and admitted to the government hospital in Tiruvallur.
The duo suffered 30 per cent burns, police said. Ali suffered severe burns on his leg, police added. They brought the crackers from Mappedu in Perambakkam and stocked them near Mariamman temple in Polivakkam, with an intention to burst them in an open field during the festival.
The festival started on March 24 with the flag hoisting and the deity was taken around on a palanquin on Sunday night. When Sanjeevi lit a cracker, sparks from the cracker fell on the remaining ones and that triggered the fire accident, said police.
The onlookers informed the police and the fire personnel near the temple, who rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Ali and Sanjeevi were rushed to the government hospital. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
