Coimbatore: Two dalits were assaulted by a seven-member group, in a dispute over an intercaste relationship, near an agricultural field on Periyakalandai-Mettuvavi road near Negamam on Saturday evening. The rural police have detained four people including a minor boy for their involvement in the assault.

The injured were identified as N Selvaraj, 40, and J Kumar, 33, of Periyakalandai village. Police said Selvaraj and Kumar were daily wage labourers belonging to the scheduled caste community. According to police, Selvaraj's younger brother Murugavel, 22, had a relationship with a 21-year-old woman from an upper caste. The woman's elder brother, S Ramachandran, 22, came to know about their relationship and attacked Selvaraj, along with a few of his friends.
