CHENNAI: A teenager from Assam waiting for a bus near Kilambakkam bus terminus, was abducted by three men in an autorickshaw and sexually assaulted on Monday night.
However, the gang pushed her out at Nerkundram as her screams for help got the attention of passersby, who alerted police. As a patrol vehicle approached them, the trio took off. Police are yet to identify the vehicle or arrest the suspects.
Police said the 18-year-old had come from Salem and reached the Kilambakkam terminus at 11pm on Monday. She was waiting for a bus to visit her relative at Madhavaram.
As she was alone at the bus stop, and couldn't find a bus to her destination, she started walking opposite the bus terminus, which was deserted. An auto driver, who picked up a conversation with her, told her he could take her to Madhavaram.
She told police that though she refused the ride, he forcibly pushed her into the autorickshaw and drove off.
He then called two of his friends over the phone, and they too got into the autorickshaw from different areas, she said.
The trio then sexually assaulted her at knifepoint. When the woman screamed, passersby heard her and alerted the police control room.
A police team started following the autorickshaw.
As the three men saw police trailing them, they pushed the girl out at Nerkundram and escaped.
An auto driver, who spoke to the survivor at Nerkundram, said, "She stopped my vehicle and began to cry. She had injuries on her neck and insisted I take her to the nearest police station. That's when police arrived," he said.
Based on her statement, the Tambaram city police registered a case. Special teams have been formed to nab the trio, who are still at large. Police are checking CCTV footage from the locality to trace the autorickshaw driver.
