Tamil Nadu: Boy practising basketball at YMCA steps on live wire, dies
CHENNAI: An 11-year-old boy playing basketball at YMCA, Nandanam, died on Saturday after he stepped on a live wire lying exposed on the open ground adjacent to the court. Riyan Adhav, a Class VI student from D'Silva Street in Mylapore, had been training at the YMCA for the past few months.
Around 6pm on Saturday, he stepped out of the court to fetch the ball when he came in contact with the live wire and was electrocuted. His coach and other students rushed him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Riyan's parents Dayal Sundaram and Geetha Priya are senior doctors at a private hospital at Thousand Lights.
Police are trying to find out whether the wire was laid by the YMCA management or by private contractors who hosted events on weekends. "We are trying to find out if there is a case of negligence," said a police official. The YMCA ground is often rented for private events during weekends. On Saturday and Sunday, there were four different events including a cinema music concert, police said. Adhav's body was handed over to his parents after postmortem at the Royapettah Government Hospital.
