Deaths by accident death and then suicide – ECR sees double tragedy

Cleared - maniChennai: The picturesque East Coast Road (ECR) stood a mute witness to a double tragedy on Saturday afternoon – one was death of a 20-year-old girl in a bike accident, and the other, which happened within 30 minutes, was the death of her distraught collegemate-friend who jumped in front of a speeding bus and killed himself.Police said S Yogeshwaran, 20, of Uthiramerur was riding a bike with his friend E Sabarina, 20, of Madurantakam on the pillion. Both were third-year engineering students at Padalam near Chengalpet, and they were returning to the college after a visit to Mamallapuram. At around 12.30pm, a Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) bus on its way to Puducherry from Chennai hit their bike from behind at Poonjeri village junction on the ECR.In the impact, while Sabarina fell and came under the bus wheels, Yogeshwaran was thrown off the bike. Police, quoting eyewitnesses, said Yogeshwaran gathered himself up and sat next to the motionless body of Sabarina for a couple of minutes. He then lifted her and took her in a helpful autorickshaw to a hospital around 500metres from the accident spot. He was apparently under the impression that she had swooned due to injuries and that she would revive.However, as doctors declared her dead within five minutes, he stood there for a few minutes and walked out. Even as doctors and others were discussing how to contact the girl's family, he ran towards the busy ECR and jumped in front of a bus coming from Chennai to Puducherry. He got crushed and died on the spot.Police said the two youngsters studied together in school, and then joined the same engineering college. They were doing different majors in the same college.Police sent the bodies to a govt hospital in Mamallapuram for autopsy. The Mamallapuram police registered two separate cases and arrested the PRTC drivers, Paramasivam and Arumugam, on charges of negligent driving.
