Chennai: Centuries by openers Sai Sudharsan and N Jagadeesan helped Tamil Nadu outbat Chhattisgarh and defeat them by 14 runs in their Vijay Hazare Trophy encounter in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Chhattisgarh captain Harpreet Singh Bhatia and middle-order batter Amandeep Khare scored hundreds too, but could not find enough support from others to get their team across the line.
The TN openers bettered their 177-run partnership in the previous match against Andhra by putting together 233 runs in 34.5 overs after Chhattisgarh won the toss and decided to field first. Both Sudharsan (121 off 109 balls) and Jagadeesan (107 off 113 balls) scored at a brisk pace and kept the run rate well above 6.
Chhattisgarh bowlers pegged things back a bit after Sudharsan’s dismissal, picking up the next five wickets for 59 runs. Medium pacer Ravi Kiran accounted for three of those scalps. The Baba twins (Aparajith & Indrajith) then provided a late flourish to the TN innings to take the total to 340.
In reply, Chhattisgarh lost their openers cheaply but had a 214-run third-wicket partnership between Bhatia (121 off 129 balls) and Khare (115 off 99 balls) to harbour hopes of victory.
TN bowlers, however managed to quell these hopes by snaring six wickets in the last 10 overs.
