CHENNAI: Passengers and the crew of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (

TNSTC

) bus had a narrow escape when the vehicle went up in flames at Melmaruvathur near Chennai on Wednesday morning.

No one was injured in the accident that happened around 8.15am. There were 49 passengers on board.

A team of fire and rescue personnel from the

Acharapakkam

fire station rushed to the spot. However, before they arrived at the spot, the bus had been gutted.

Bus driver P Neelakantan, 45, told Melmaruvathur police inspector Venkatesan that he had stopped the bus on noticing a smoke emanating from the engine. Neelakantan and conductor V Kaliaperumal, 39, helped the passengers get down from the bus.

The bus belonged to the Vilupuram depot.
