CUDDALORE: A woman, who posed as a cop and asked policemen on duty at
Chidambaram station to release a man detained for drunken driving, was arrested on Thursday.
Police said a woman in police uniform arrived at the Chidambaram town police station and introduced herself as sub-inspector of police posted at Saidapet station in Chennai. She demanded that the policemen in the station release Sakkarapani, 55, who was arrested on charges of drunken driving in the temple town on Thursday.
The policemen at the station grew suspicious and asked her to produce her identity card.
However, she refused to produce her identity card and asked them to release the traffic offender immediately.
The policemen made a few phone calls and came to know that she was not a cop.
Initial inquiries revealed that the woman, identified as Sooriyapriya, 27, and her second husband, Rajadurai, had been extorting money from traffic offenders by posing as cops and holding vehicle checks. Police said that the duo could have been involved in petty crimes to extort money from gullible people.
The woman was separated from her first husband, Karthikeyan, and later married Rajadurai and settled in Chidambaram. The woman is expecting a baby.
Rajadurai, a Class X dropout, is a fruit vendor, who assists her in the criminal activities. He was arrested on charges of assisting her in the criminal activities.
Police suspect that she might have many aides to assist her in the criminal activities.
