CHENNAI: Regional transport officers (RTOs) and police officers across Tamil Nadu have suspended nearly 10,000 driving licences for traffic violations in the last two months, the state government said on Thursday.
A government statement said that RTOs had suspended 9,489 driving licences in the last two months.
The transport department recently instructed officials to suspend driving licences for traffic violations such as over speeding, overloading, drunken driving, jumping red lights, using mobile phones while driving and carrying people in goods carriages, based on the recommendations of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety.

The statement urged road users to obey the traffic rules, adding that last year, there were 71,431 road accidents in state, in which 17,218 people died. Till June this year, there were 33,345 road accidents, in which 8,452 people were killed, the statement added.
