on Tuesday sentenced a 32-year-old man and his wife for murdering his sexagenarian mother two years ago.
Arumugam of Pallikuppam village near Katpadi and his wife, Priya, 26, murdered his mother, Raniammal, 60, on July 25, 2017 over a property dispute.
According to public prosecutor A G Annamalai, Raniammal owned properties worth Rs 10 crore. They included seven acres of land, 10 shops and a rice mill. There was a dispute between Raniammal and her son over sharing the properties with his sisters, Anandhi and Ponniammal.
On July 25, 2017, while Raniammal was grazing her cattle, a dispute broke out between her and her son. Arumugam assaulted his mother, and she fell unconscious. Arumugam carried her to his home where he and his wife smothered Raniammal with a pillow.
The couple tried to torch the body. Later, they buried the half-burnt body in their farmland.
Raniammal’s elder daughter Anandhi, who is a cop, lodged a woman missing
case
with the Katpadi police on August 7.
The police questioned Arumugam and his wife who confessed to having murdered Raniammal.
On Tuesday, judge S Gunasekar sentenced the couple to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on them.
