CHENNAI: Three men from the city drowned in a well in Madurantakam near Chengalpet on Sunday afternoon. Police said one of them decided to take a dip and slipped into the well and the other two drowned trying to rescue him.
Police said S Sathish, 18, a house painter, R Kumar, 18, a Class 12 student, and C Kumaresan, 24, an employee at a private shop, were on a pilgrimage to Mailam Murugan temple near Tindivanam.
The three were residents of Sakthi Nagar in Korukkupet.
They were returning to the city and halted their vehicle on the highway off Madurantakam to cook food. The three men went in search of water and found a well in a farm. They climbed down the stairs on the side of the well. But Sathish lost balance and fell into the well.
"Sathish did not know how to swim and cried out for help. Kumar and Kumaresan jumped in to rescue him but all three drowned," a police officer said.
Other pilgrims who went in search of the trio found a pot near the well and found the bodies when they looked inside.
Fire and rescue services personnel retrieved the bodies and sent them for postmortem.
