MADURAI: In a ghastly tragedy, three men who were returning home from Deepavali shopping, were run over by the Nizamuddin superfast express near Suseendram in Kanyakumari district on Wednesday evening.
Police said the three men, all of them sculptors travelling on a two-wheeler, were killed when they attempted to cross an unmanned level crossing. The Nizamuddin Express from Kanyakumari to New Delhi was picking up speed after leaving the Kanyakumari station when the accident occurred.
The three men, identified as N Kolappan, 30,, A Muthu, 35, and A Mani, 30, from Kakkummur, were relatives.
They were experts in temple tower sculptures and had returned from Tiruvananthapuram for Diwali a few days ago.
Police said Kolappan had been married just three months ago and had come for his "Thalai Diwali." Muthu was married one-and-a-half-years ago and Mani was a bachelor. After the three men were hit by the speeding train, they were flung into the paddy field near the track and the bike, caught under the train, was dragged to a distance. The train was stopped for a short while after the accident, before it proceeded on its journey.
The entire village of Kakkumur, from where the men hailed, plunged into sorrow. There are just 150 families in the village and all of them were related to eachother.
