The incident occurred while the train was near Katpadi station. She lodged a formal complaint in Chennai on Aug 28, and the next day police publicised the suspect’s photo.
“The Twitter post uploaded on the GRP handle helped track the suspect,” said an officer, adding that an anonymous caller revealed the suspect’s name and his company.
A police team immediately set to work, tracked him down and picked him up from a friend’s house in the city.
On advice from a lawyer-friend, the survivor walked into Rajiv Gandhi govt general hospital after getting off the train and requested the hospital staff to examine her for any potential sexually transmitted diseases.
She told them she had been sexually assaulted while on the train.
Police are currently investigating the woman engineer for potential fabrication of details in her complaint. “She exaggerated the complaint as dictated by her lawyer-friend to speed up the police investigation,” said a police officer.
The arrested suspect was remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a magistrate court on Friday.
