People in this TN village boycott Lok Sabha elections
KRISHNAGIRI: People of Kadavarahalli in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu boycotted Lok Sabha elections on Friday as their demands for basic amenities were not met.
Not a single voter turned up at the polling booth in Kadavarahalli village until 9 am on Friday.
Election department officials visited the village. They were holding discussions with the villagers when this report was filed.
P Samykannu, a villager, told TOI that they had collectively decided to boycott the LS elections as their demands were not fulfilled. Their demands included basic amenities like roads, bus services and free house patta.
"We have been demanding basic amenities for years," he said.
He said no officials or elected representatives had taken any steps to address their grievances thus far. They alleged that promises were made only during election time.
Private firm
A private firm in Krishnagiri constituency allegedly refused to grant leave to its workers on polling day. The company allegedly instructed its 150 employees to report for duty on Friday.
A group of officials from the labour department visited the company. An official mentioned that they had initiated an investigation with the company's representatives following a complaint from the employees.
