CHENNAI: This time online classes in schools will be a bit different. The classes will be strictly monitored, be recorded, and also have an ‘observer’ or a ‘shadow teacher’ who will report on how the classes were conducted to their superiors.

“This teacher’s job will be to observe, their identities will not be disclosed to anyone. This will also make students feel safe, as they will be aware that someone is always watching,” said Shyamala Subbu, principal of Velammal Vidyalaya.

A few days ago, several city schools began holding classes for the new batch of 2021-22. But in the wake of increasing allegations of sexual harassment and abuse in school, they put in place a stricter system to prevent any unfortunate incident.

Apart from having a shadow teacher, schools have also created email IDs in the school domain which must only be used by students and teachers, they will also have to use the link provided by the school staff to attend online classes. Every class, starting from

to class 12 will be recorded and reviewed.

“We also have regular interactions with teachers, and parents and exchange feedback to improvise our methods,” said Shobha Raman, principal of Vidya Mandir.

their counselors to hold discussions with every class to spread awareness on abuse, and the need to report it. “This is also for teachers, they all need to be sensitised,” said Bhavani Shankar, principal of Lalaji Memorial Omega International School.

Dr.

Saranya

Jaikumar, educational psychologist and member of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TNSCPCR) said that both students and faculty must be first be explained about the

Protection of Children from Sexual Offences

(POCSO) Act, and the Juvenile Justice Act.

“Once they know their rights, children would be more confident and less hesitant to report,” she said. Dr. Saranya said that students must also be taught life skills, social skills, and be given the right to speak. And the moment anyone reports on sexual harassment, the management is bound to involve the law enforcement agency. “Students must feel safe in school, have faith in the system. Only then will these new rules have a meaning.”
