: The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday sought a total of Rs 9,302 crore from the Centre for Ockhi relief work and for preventing floods in Chennai and other coastal districts.

The Rs 9,302crore sought by the state includes Rs 4,508 crore for long-term restoration work in the cyclone Ockhi-hit areas and Rs 747 crore for immediate relief (a total of Rs 5,255 crore). The remaining Rs 4,047 crore was for restoring the damage caused by the recent floods in Chennai and other coastal districts and to carry out permanent works to prevent floods in Chennai.

“Considering the devastation caused by Ockhi, we have asked the Prime Minister for an immediate sanction of Rs 747 crore,” chief minister

told reporters after meeting Modi in Kanyakumari. The Prime Minister was in Kanyakumari to interact with the cyclone-affected people in the district.

Palanisami also sought Rs 4,218 crore for establishing an integrated fishing harbour in Kanyakumari district.

In his memorandum, the chief minister urged the Centre to declare the damage caused by cyclone Ockhi as a national disaster. There were nine demands in the chief minister’s memorandum to the Prime Minister.

"The Prime Minister said he would consider the demands," the chief minister said.

Palaniswami said a central team would visit the cyclone Ockhi-hit areas soon.
