Tamil Nadu registers 2,405 cases, 49 deaths, vaccinates 1.36 lakh

Fresh cases of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu dropped further on Thursday, when the state reported 2,405 new cases compared to 2,458 on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: Fresh cases of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu dropped further on Thursday, when the state reported 2,405 new cases compared to 2,458 on Wednesday.
The state registered 49 deaths, pushing the cumulative death toll to 33,606. Since March 2020, TN has reported 25.28 lakh Covid cases. After discharging 3,006 people from the state registry, there were 29,950 people still under treatment for the viral infection.

On Thursday, seven districts reported cases in three digits and 24 districts reported cases below 50.

Coimbatore reported 256 cases followed by 163 in Thanjavur and 159 in Erode. Among cities, Chennai reported 148 cases, Salem had 155, Trichy logged 88 and Madurai reported 34. Tenkasi reported 11 cases – lowest – followed by Ramanathapuram (15) and Tirunelveli (20). “The rate of decline has slowed down and is not uniform across all districts. While the state continues to test 1.5 lakh people every day, it is important for people to wear mask and maintain social distance,” said director of public health Dr TS Selvavinayagam.
Of the 49 deaths in the state, Chennai reported seven deaths followed by six in Coimbatore, and three each in Salem, Chengalpet, Perambalur and Thirupathur. At least 17 districts in the state did not report any deaths.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has reported nearly 4,000 cases of black fungus and has urged the centre to provide more drugs for treatment of the infection in post covid patients.
Meanwhile, the state received 6.01 lakh doses of Covisheild and 91,580 doses of Covaxin on Thursday, when the state vaccinated 1.36 lakh people. The number of vaccinations on Thursday came down from 2.07 lakh on Wednesday, 3.3lakh on Tuesday and 3.7lakh on Monday. “We have 2.1 lakh vaccines on Thursday morning. The number of vaccinations is dependent on stock,” said joint director (immunisation) Dr K Vinay Kumar.
