However, Stephie later separated from her husband and has been in a live-in relationship with David, 32, of the same area. Recently, David grew suspicious over her having an affair with someone else and both of them used to have heated arguments over this.
On Tuesday night a quarrel erupted between the couple. Around 2 am, in a fit of rage, David allegedly smashed Stephie's two-year-old daughter Katherine along with the cradle she was sleeping in against a wall and fled from the house. Stephie rushed Katherine to Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital, but the doctors declared the baby brought dead, police said. Thazhamuthunagar police registered a case based on a complaint by Stephie and later arrested David. Further investigation is on.
In another incident in Tuticorin the same day, a 21-year-old man was murdered by three friends after he allegedly misbehaved with the wife of one of them in a drunken state. Police identified the deceased as Madhan, 21, from Therespuram near Tiruchendur. Police said, despite repeated warnings, he continued to misbehave with the woman and it happened on Monday also. Subsequently, the woman's husband and his two friends hacked him to death and disposed of his body. Tiruchendur police registered a case after there was no sign of Madhan and later arrested the three for the murder. Further investigation is on.
Meanwhile, PMK youth wing leader Dr Anbumani Ramadoss reiterated that liquor has been the cause for such violent acts by men and stressed the need for prohibition in Tamil Nadu. "From murder to robbery, liquor is at the root of all crimes. As long as liquor is sold, many more men will indulge in such crimes. Prohibition is the only way to ensure peace and safety in Tamil Nadu," he said.
