village near Suthamalli on Friday night. The woman SI, Margaret Teresa (29), was attacked by the accused allegedly over a drunk driving case against him that was registered a month ago. The SI had suffered injuries on her neck and had been admitted to Tirunelveli government medical college hospital.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday in Tirunelveli, the DGP praised the way in which the SI handled the situation. He also gave away certificates and cash awards to three cops, Lakshmi, Ramesh and Manikandan, who had subdued the accused after the attack and secured his arrest.

“The woman SI is making a good recovery. It appears that the accused harboured an enmity over the drunk driving case and is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol when carrying out the attack. Further investigation is on to ascertain if there is any other motive,” he added.
