TN boys clinch volleyball gold, bronze for girls

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu boys volleyball team clinched gold by defeating Haryana 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-15) at the Khelo India Youth Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here on Sunday. “I am happy with the way the boys played in the tournament. We had a 25-day preparatory camp and the players made use of the opportunity by training vigorously,” TN coach Surendar told TOI.The TN contingent remained unbeaten throughout the competition. “All the eight states are equally good. We made use of the chances and executed the strategies after understanding our opponents. This gave us a slight edge over them. Moreover, our state has many inborn talent. We just have to mold them by teaching the right techniques.”Earlier, the TN girls team bagged bronze by getting the better of Gujarat 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-6). By winning three gold medals, TN held on to the second spot in the tally with 29 gold metals, as against Maharashtra’s 37.First gold for TN in swimming: Deeksha Sivakumar of TN secured the gold medal in girls 100m breaststroke by clocking 1:07.91 at the SDAT Aquatic Complex here. Nithik Nathella, who missed out on winning a medal in 200m freestyle, clinched silver in boys 100m backstroke with a timing of 57.63. In 4x100m girls relay, the TN team, consisting of Shreenithi Natesan, Dayanitha Sankar, Adwika Girish Nair and Deeksha Sivakumar, settled for silver by clocking 4:12.34 behind Maharashtra.Shreenithi finished the day’s proceedings by winning bronze in girls 200m breaststroke (2:43.13). Vritti Agarwal from Telangana continued her prime form by clinching her third gold medal at the KIYG.Dheershan wins bronze in weightlifting: J Dheershan from TN won bronze in boys 89kg by lifting 286kg (snatch – 133kg and clean & jerk – 153kg). Andhra Pradesh’s V Ramu and Sanidhya Sanjay More of Maharashtra won gold (292kg) and silver (291kg) respectively. In the boys 81kg category, Sairaj Pardeshi of Maharashtra created a new youth national record by registering 286kg. Kishore secures gold for hosts in road cycling: TN’s Kishore N won gold in boys 80km road cycling event by clocking 02:04:02.980.
