Tamil Nadu bandh affects train services

CHENNAI: Workers of the DMK and other parties detained several trains in Tamil Nadu on Thursday as part of a dawn-to-dusk bandh against the Centre’s failure to constitute a Cauvery management board. Southern Railway general manager R K Kulshreshta appealed to the bandh supporters to refrain from detaining trains considering the inconvenience and possible safety hazards.
According to an official statement, trains were detained by agitators at Avadi, Chennai Park, Vaniyambadi, Jolarpettai and Ambur railway stations. About 10 EMU trains were held up. Four express trains were also affected by the protests.
Passenger train and express train services were disrupted by agitators at various places in Salem division. Trains were held up at Magudanchavadi, Morappur, Cauvery, Elamanur, Rasipuram, Tiruppur and Lalapet railway stations. Around eight trains were detained by the agitators.
Train No 16343 Thiruvananthapuram – Madurai Amirtha Express was held up at Pollachi railway station by around 200 agitators.
Train No 56718 Tirunelveli – Nagercoil passenger train was held up near Thamirabarani bridge between Tirunelveli and Sengulam railway stations by about 150 agitators.
Passenger trains and express train services were disrupted at various places in Tiruchchirappalli Divisio. About 16 trains were held up by the agitators.
All the trains were released in less than 30 minutes.
