Somayaji was appointed advocate general on March 7, 2013 after a brief stint as additional advocate general when the present AIADMK Rajya Sabha member A Navaneethakrishnan was advocate general of the state.

Somayaji had held the post of additional advocate general during the latter half of chief minister Jayalalithaa's 2001-2006 regime.

Though senior lawyer R Muthukumaraswamy is tipped to succeed Somayaji as the next advocate general of Tamil Nadu, official confirmation is yet to come. This, however, has not deterred his well-wishers from calling his office or visiting the designated senior counsel in person to congratulate him.
