TIRUVANNAMALAI: Three children, who went to bathe in a lake in a village near Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai district drowned.
Police said K Arul, 10, his brothers K Ajith, 9 and K Sandeep, 7 and his neighbour A Jeevan Kumar, 8 went to bathe in a lake in Kenganallur on Friday.
One of them accidentally reached the deepest portion of the lake and raised an alarm for help.
The others attempted to save him. In the melee, three boys - Arul, his brother Sandeep, 7 and neighbour Jeevan Kumar drowned while Ajith, who was afloat, was spotted by villagers and was saved by them. The efforts of villagers to resuce the other three boys turned futile. The villagers alerted the police. A team from fire and rescue services personnel reached the spot and managed to dish out the bodies of the three children.
Police sent the bodies for postmortem examination to Tiruvannamalai government general hospital.
The district administration has been repeatedly issuing advisory not to bathe in lakes during monsoon.
