CHENNAI: Four men, who have been lodged in the quarantine block at the Puzhal prison in Chennai in connection with the alleged murder of neurosurgeon Dr S D Subbiah are adamant, prison authorities said.
Dr Subbiah was attacked by a three-member gang near Bilroth Hospital at Raja Annamalaipuram on September 14 last year. The neurosurgeon died on September 23 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the city.
The Chennai police solved the case by arresting four men – Dr James Satish Kumar and henchmen Murugan, Selva Prakash and Iyyappan – on January 29.
The motive for the murder was a 2.25-acre property which Dr Subbiah inherited through ancestral will. The prime accused, Ponnusamy, a former school teacher, his wife Mary Pushpam, his sons P Basil, a lawyer, and P Boris were arrested by the police personnel immediately after Subbiah’s murder.
James Satish Kumar Murugan, Selva Prakash and Iyyappan, who are lodged in the quarantine cell, appear before the investigation officers at 10am every day to sign a register in accordance with the instruction of the Madras high court.
The prison authorities said the assailants are often talking and discussing among themselves and they entertained only their lawyers. A prison official said, “The assailants form a group and they didn’t regret committing the gruesome murder in the city.”
As there is a possibility to attack the people, who helped the police personnel to nab the them, prison authorities decided to keep them at a secluded cell. “If we allow them to mingle with other criminals, they may devise plans with the other accused,” a prison officer said.
