Students protest over lack of basic amenities at Pachaiyappa’s college

Chennai: Scores of Pachaiyappa's college students, often in the news for the wrong reasons, on Wednesday protested outside the college and inside it, demanding basic amenities including lavatories in all blocks, proper food in the canteen and clean water at the 182-year-old institution.
The protesters, led by Students Federation of India Chennai district president Arun, said the Pachaiyappa's Trust Board, which administers the college, is yet to appoint office-bearers of the management committe after holding elections and also failed to provide basic amenities.
The college administration should be held responsible for restricting students' access to toilets after 10am, they said, demanding that adequate toilet facilities be provided in all buildings on the campus.
They also wanted the suspension of a professor revoked and students coming a little after 10am to be allowed in.
The protest went on for about three hours, with students not attending classes. An investigation officer quoting a professor of the college said that there are at least 30 to 50 errant students in the institution.
"Another 100 more students follow these students and bring a bad reputation to the college through their activities," he said.
Since Pongal in Jan, Pachaiyappa's College students have been ere involved in at least five cases in Kilpauk, North Beach, Ambattur and Gummidipoondi for creating ruckus and attacking students of rival colleges, a police officer said.
