Stalin’s Kolathur becomes taluk
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu govt has bifurcated the Ayanavaram taluk in Chennai to form a new taluk, with Kolathur as its headquarters.
This move aims at facilitating easier access for residents to essential services, including social security pensions, revenue documents, and various certificates such as those for community, income and legal heir.
Residents will now benefit from more streamlined processes for obtaining necessary documents and services. Chief minister M K Stalin inaugurated the taluk office in G K M Colony on Monday.
"The office is expected to move to a permanent building on Paper Mills Road soon," according to an official. With the new Kolathur taluk, Chennai now has 17 taluks.
A government order specifies that Konnur, Malligmaicheri, Ayanavaram, and Chinnasembarambakkam revenue villages will remain under Ayanavaram taluk while Kolathur, Siruvallur, and Peravallur revenue villages will be part of the new Kolathur taluk.
Kolathur taluk falls under the Central Chennai Revenue Division and will come under the Kolathur assembly constituency represented by Stalin, as well as the North Chennai Parliamentary constituency.
Plans are under way to bring Sembium village in Perambur into Kolathur taluk to complete the Kolathur assembly constituency.
“The demand for new taluk arises from the inconvenience and travel time required to access the services in Ayanavaram taluk. Creation of a new taluk in Kolathur would greatly reduce this burden. Now the area of Ayanavaram is 9.06sq km while Kolathur is 6.24sq km. The population of Kolathur and Ayanavaram is 3.78 lakh and 3.7 lakh respectively," the official added.
Govt has sanctioned 42 posts for Kolathur taluk, including tahsildars, deputy tahsildars, and revenue inspectors. Officials have taken charge. Segregation of old age pensioners of Kolathur taluk has commenced, and certificates are being handed over to the applicants.
The last time Chennai district saw the addition of taluks was in January 2018. The previous AIADMK regime annexed Sholinganallur, Ambattur, Madhavaram, Maduravoyal, Tiruvottiyur and Alandur taluks of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts into the Chennai district.
