Stalin inaugurates highway projects worth Rs 1,141 crore
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Thursday inaugurated highway projects worth ₹1,141.23 crore in Chengalpet and Tiruvannamalai districts. The projects he inaugurated included the widened Cheyyur-Panaiyur Link Road and the 109km-long Cheyyur-Vandavasi-Polur Road.
The Cheyyur-Panaiyur Link Road project, funded under the Chennai-Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor scheme, with assistance from the Asian Development Bank, included road widening, realignment of utility pipelines, and long-term maintenance.
The upgraded road was expanded to a 10meter-wide stretch, integrating safety features such as streetlights, surveillance cameras, and public amenities like bus shelters with restrooms. A total of 47,700 saplings were planted along the corridor for environmental sustainability, said an official release.
As part of the Cheyyur-Vandavasi-Polur Road project, three bypass roads were constructed in Maruthadu, Vandavasi, and Sethupattu to ease congestion by diverting heavy vehicles away from town centres. The road features five high-level bridges, 14 minor bridges and 225 culverts to ensure smoother connectivity.
This road network strategically links the East Coast Road (ECR), Chennai-Trichy National Highway, and Villupuram-Mangaluru National Highway, enhancing trade and transport efficiency.
The improved connectivity is expected to reduce travel time and benefit 67 villages, facilitating the transport of agricultural produce and improving access to educational institutions and hospitals in urban centres.
