Stalin announces Rs 5crore reward for Gukesh for winning World Chess Championship

Stalin called Gukesh over the phone and congratulated him.
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Friday announced a reward of Rs 5 crore to Gukesh Dommaraju who has become the youngest world chess champion.

An official release said Stalin conceded to the demand of deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who also holds the portfolio of youth and sports welfare, and announced a Rs 5crore reward to honour the achievement of the chess champion.

Stalin called Gukesh over the phone and congratulated him.

Gukesh overcame a stiff contest from China's Ding Liren at the World Chess Championship in Singapore on Friday and claimed the championship.

The release said the govt led by Stalin has been giving prime importance to sports and youth welfare activities. He said after Udhayanidhi assumed charge as the sports and youth welfare minister, Tamil Nadu hosted several international, national and state level sports championships. The state hosted the World Chess Championship last year successfully. Stalin invited all players from Tamil Nadu, who participated in the championship and honoured them.

Earlier, Stalin in a post on X congratulated Gukesh for bringing laurels to India and Tamil Nadu by winning the championship.
